Scope uses Microsoft 365 Copilot to remove barriers and empower every employee | Microsoft Customer Stories
How can a nonprofit do more without asking too much from staff? This customer story shows how Scope, which supports 4.6 million disabled people each year across the UK, adopted Microsoft 365 Copilot to automate translation, document drafting, and information retrieval. With admin tasks streamlined, Scope freed staff to focus on direct engagement and built a more inclusive workplace. Read the story to learn from Scope's experience with Microsoft 365 Copilot.
How did Microsoft 365 Copilot help Scope reduce admin work?
Scope, a UK disability equality charity that supports 4.6 million disabled people each year, was spending a lot of time on manual admin work—things like sponsorship emails, reporting, and managing program data. This slowed teams down and made it harder to scale impact without increasing workload.
By adopting Microsoft 365 and Microsoft 365 Copilot, Scope has been able to:
- Automate routine tasks such as translation, document drafting, and information retrieval.
- Streamline collaboration so colleagues no longer spend hours reconciling different versions of documents.
- Use AI agents to support specific workflows—Scope has already created more than 640 AI agents.
Since rolling out Copilot to all staff in November 2025, usage has scaled quickly, with colleagues generating over 26,560 prompts in a typical month. This shift has freed people to focus on direct engagement, analysis, and collaboration instead of repetitive admin. As one employee put it, their work is now judged more on the outcomes it produces than on the effort it takes to get there.
How is Scope using AI to improve accessibility and inclusion at work?
Scope set out to reimagine its internal technology so it better reflected its mission of disability equality. Many disabled colleagues found existing tools hard to use, and the organization wanted to remove those barriers.
To do this, Scope:
- Standardized on Microsoft 365 to reduce manual work and improve real-time collaboration.
- Rolled out Microsoft 365 Copilot to all staff, so everyone can use AI to help with writing, meeting summaries, and analysis.
- Created the “Hargreaves engine”, which lets employees load a document into Copilot and get real-time feedback on accessibility, tone, and clarity against Scope’s internal standards.
- Delivered accessible training in both in-person and virtual formats, with content recorded so colleagues could review it in ways that worked for them.
For disabled colleagues, the impact is very practical. For example, one evaluation officer with cerebral palsy uses Copilot to capture meeting insights so she can focus on the conversation instead of taking notes. As Scope’s Executive Director of Digital and Marketing explains, Copilot helps “magnify each person’s ability” and allows colleagues to shine by reducing the friction of everyday tasks.
What is Scope building next with AI for employers and job seekers?
Scope’s long-term goal is to help reduce barriers to employment for disabled people across the UK and close the disability employment gap. Building on its internal AI journey with Microsoft 365 Copilot, Scope is now developing agentic AI-powered tools that can take action and respond dynamically to user needs.
These initiatives include:
- Employer guidance tools that provide immediate, conversational advice on creating more accessible recruitment practices.
- A job seeker–focused tool to support disabled candidates when applying for roles and identifying accessible software and work environments.
- An employer-facing AI platform that helps reduce time spent on admin by drafting communications, summarizing key information, and surfacing relevant guidance quickly—supporting more confident and inclusive hiring decisions.
Internally, Scope has also invested in security and governance to support this work. It uses Microsoft Entra, Microsoft Defender, and Microsoft Sentinel to move from a reactive to a proactive security posture, and it applies clear governance and ethical standards to how AI is developed and deployed.
By combining inclusive design, secure AI, and practical tools for both employers and job seekers, Scope is working to reshape how organizations think about accessibility and employment for disabled people.
